Poetry means nothing to me I just don’t see why it should mean anything A poet, they might have something to say But you’d have to be them to see it their way Poetry, there’s nothing to see Beyond a bunch of As, Bs, Cs, and Ds And anything else to describe a line They’re all just words from a high school mind Oh poetry, must you speak symbolically, In words that ring and rhyme, Although they may never make a shred of sense? Poetry means nothing to me At least in the sense that it’s something to teach I see students bend their ears to the sound As if it were something to turn me around Well I turn around and I turn around It’s the same poem on the same grounds You can’t make me see anything there And you might as well stop trying to make me care Oh poetry, enough of this formality! Why can’t you sing in a key That doesn’t pretend to be more than it means? Once you get it in your head That there’s something deeper to be read Then you only see the things you want to see And once you start to read it again, it goes A, A, B, A, A, B, and then You’re so disappointed when it doesn’t make you think Poetry means nothing to me Aside from the facts, like “this is verse three” I may be in love with the sound But it won’t be any different when I turn around And I turn around and I turn around…

Fall, fall, fall! Honey, money & jewels could make you rich beyond compare But they won’t buy you time Honey, money & jewels gave you a seat way up the stairs But now you wait in line With the rest of us – and we’re so glad That you could come today because Everybody’s here to watch you Fall, fall, fall! The bees brought you honey, asking nothing in return And you took it when you could Knowing you’d been spoiled sweet And that you did not deserve anything that good But still you kicked the nest in half You made them scatter, watched and laughed You stood so tall, now you got a long way to Fall, fall, fall! Desiree, from a Hyde Park apartment Now recently a refugee from a well-to-do family You – with the bluest eyes, the brightest pearls, The biggest lies that I ever heard! At least you’ve got diamonds to wear When you know deep down that you can’t go anywhere Lock them away in a box labeled “handle with care” But if your jewel box ends up on The bedroom floor and you’re alone It might be enough to make you trip and Fall, fall, fall!

Heave and ho, boys, let her go, boys Watch the snow falling on Yosemite I lived and learned there, I won’t return there The poor John Milton has borne away to sea So goodbye California I feel like I haven’t known you long But it’s not the same, the rain never came Drove us apart, I don’t know who to blame But what’s done is done and now I must be gone Heave and ho, belles, let her go, belles I saw the redwoods grow for centuries I lived and learned there, but I won’t return there The poor Jane Austen has sailed away to sea So goodbye California You’ll barely look the same when I come through But you know I can’t stay, I can’t wait for that day Let go of the wheel while you’re slipping away You’ll be someone new, but I’ll be changing, too Heave and ho, boys, let her go, boys There’ll be no more trains in Dunsmuir anymore I lived and learned there, but I won’t return there The poor Jack London has sailed away from shore Heave and ho, belles, let her go, belles Life in the sunset, it came so easily We lived and learned there, but we won’t return there The poor Joan Didion has borne away to sea Heave and ho, boys, let her go, boys When you wake up, we’ll both know where I’ll be We lived and learned there, but we won’t return there The poor John Steinbeck has borne away to sea Heave and ho, belles, let her go, belles After all, you know what we’re leaving for We live and learn, still, and we won’t return ‘til This maiden voyage has swept upon the shore This maiden voyage won’t sail away no more

about

C&C no. 3: "Bird Hospital"

Why "Bird Hospital"? I'm not really sure myself. I know I saw the words on a building in the Sunset, and I immediately got the feeling that they'd make a great title. Still, I had to wait for the right thing before I could use it, and somehow, these twelve songs – partly written back home in California, partly written here at college – just seemed to fit.

Each one's in a different style and none of them are about birds or hospitals, but if they have anything in common, it would be pain. That's not to make the album sound too dark or heavy, since pain comes in many shapes and sizes. I hope you can hear it all without me having to explain too much.

More than anything, though, I just hope you enjoy the music. This is probably the best I've ever sounded audio-wise, though I still have a long way to go. I might even use a real studio for the next album. Don't count on it, though.

Once again, I owe it all to the many musicians who performed on the record, and to the many friends and family who made it possible. Thanks for all the care and hard work.
- CK

2020 Update: "Breathing" was originally the 11th song on the album. After some consideration, I've decided that the song is in very poor taste and it is no longer useful to leave it on the album. I have removed it from the track list for the time being, but you will still see credits for it in the booklet that comes with the purchase.
